NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
This drone strike is proof that Iraq is failing as a sovereign state. A sitting regional president’s residence can be attacked in broad daylight, and the Iraqi government cannot prevent it. This is not negligence it is state collapse, where foreign-backed militias dictate who lives safely and who does not.
The Iranian regime is clearly orchestrating these attacks. By using militias as proxy forces inside Iraq, Tehran is effectively turning Iraq into a puppet state, exploiting its territory for power projection while leaving the population and government powerless. Baghdad’s condemnations are meaningless when armed groups act with near-total impunity.
And the religious and ideological narratives used by these militias are a dangerous smokescreen. They present themselves as defenders of faith or resistance, but their actions targeting leaders, destabilizing regions, and threatening civilians are criminal, destabilizing, and foreign controlled. Iraq is no longer a nation governed by law; it is a playground for Iran’s proxies, with its people and institutions paying the price.
Article:
Between March 29 and March 31, 2026, a drone strike targeted the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the autonomous Kurdistan Region in Iraq. The strike caused structural damage but fortunately no casualties were reported. Security analysts and Kurdish officials quickly attributed the attack to Iran-backed militias operating from Iraqi territory, highlighting the continuing influence of Tehran-aligned armed groups inside Iraq.
The United States strongly condemned the strike, labeling it an act of terrorism and a direct challenge to Iraq’s sovereignty. International media reported that French President Emmanuel Macron and other foreign leaders expressed concern, warning that the attack signals a dangerous escalation of violence and instability within Iraq, a country already struggling with militia dominance and weak state enforcement. The incident reflects not only a threat to foreign interests and local governance but also the failure of Baghdad to control armed groups operating on its own soil.
The attack illustrates how Iran-aligned militias have the capability to strike high-profile targets in the heart of Iraqi politics, demonstrating Baghdad’s lack of control and the persistent erosion of sovereignty. It also highlights the growing regional dimension of Iraqi instability, as foreign governments and residents now operate under constant threat from militia attacks.
