Iraq continues paying the price for militia dominance as fears grow that the country is no longer fully controlling its own future

AUTHORS NOTE:
I honestly do not know how anyone can still pretend this situation is normal. Iraq keeps acting like a country trapped inside somebody else’s conflict while ordinary Iraqis are expected to just live with permanent instability, fear, and uncertainty. Every time tensions rise involving Iran, Iraq immediately becomes nervous because everyone understands that armed groups inside the country could suddenly become part of the escalation whether the Iraqi people want it or not.

This is what years of militia influence and weak governance have done to Iraq. Instead of becoming a strong independent country after all the suffering Iraqis endured, the state still looks fragile and divided. Politicians keep talking about sovereignty, but sovereignty means nothing if armed factions connected to external interests can still influence the country’s security reality more than official institutions themselves.

What makes this even more frustrating is that Iraq has everything needed to succeed. The country has massive oil wealth, a young population, strategic importance, and enormous potential. Yet instead of being known for development and recovery, Iraq continues being associated internationally with militias, corruption, regional conflict, and instability. Foreign governments still warn their citizens about Iraq, investors remain cautious, and the entire country constantly feels one step away from another crisis.

And the worst part is that the Iraqi people are exhausted. People are tired of politicians making speeches while nothing changes. They are tired of watching their country become a battleground for regional influence instead of a functioning state focused on its own citizens. Iraqis deserve security, stability, and a future not controlled by militias, corruption, and external agendas that continue dragging the country backwards year after year.

ARTICLE:
On 13 May 2026, Iraqi security and political officials remained focused on the growing risk that regional tensions involving Iran and allied armed groups could further destabilize Iraq’s internal situation. Iraqi authorities continued emphasizing that no armed faction should carry out military or security actions outside official state authority, while security agencies maintained elevated monitoring in sensitive areas of Baghdad and other locations.

Regional analysts and diplomatic observers continued warning that Iraq remains highly vulnerable to spillover effects from broader Middle East tensions because of the presence of Iran-aligned militias operating inside the country. Discussions throughout the week also focused on concerns that Iraq’s political and security institutions remain deeply affected by the influence of armed groups that possess both military capabilities and political leverage.

International concern over Iraq’s security environment also remained visible through ongoing travel warnings, diplomatic security measures, and repeated calls for stability and restraint from foreign governments monitoring developments inside the country.

This platform is run by one person, but it carries the voices of many. It exists for the people of Iraq who live in fear, who cannot speak freely, and whose stories are often ignored or erased. With limited resources but deep responsibility, I report on government and power not for influence or profit, but because truth still matters. When silence is forced, this space chooses to speak — carefully, bravely, and with humanity.
